Abstract : The Medical Officer of Health of Croydon describes a valuable step towards the better co-ordination of the obstetric agencies available in his county borough.
Before April 1930, when the L.G. Act 1929 came into operation, a voluntary society maintained 15 child-welfare centres, staffed medically by the council, and a maternity hospital of 32 beds, staffed medically by a rota of 6 general practitionersgeneral practitionersSubject Category: People Groups

attending in weekly succession. The Antenatal work for patients' admitted to the hospital was conducted by the Council. In addition there was a Guardians' maternity block of 20 beds with its own antenatal'clinic: Obvious defects of this system were that-the antenatal doctors were apt to lose sight of their cases and be 'unable to check their findings; under the weekly rota system patients might be attended by 3 doctors in ä fortnight, who had no personal knowledge of the antenatal findings; and there was no postnatal examination. Under the new scheme an experienced obstetrician has been appointed in charge (15096)
of the municipal (formerly guardians') maternity wards. He also acts as supervisor of the midwivesmidwivesSubject Category: People Groups

. Every patient has a record sheet which accompanies her throughout her progress, antenatally, natally and up to the postnatal clinic, which is conducted by the newly appointed obstetrician and this record sheet will be available for future confinements. The obstetrician will be at the disposal of general practitioners as a consultant for necessitous patients. He will also lecture to pupil midwives at both maternity institutions and give postgraduate instruction to practising midwives.
A lady almoner has been appointed on the staff of the Medical Officer of Health in order to put admissions to the two hospitals on thé same footing. She will take the place of the relieving officer, who formerly arranged admissions to the guardians' hospital, and will make all financial investigations needed for assessing patients' payments.
