. Approximately 46 000 definitions are given. The definitions include reference to the first use of the term, the meaning of the term, cross-references to words used in defining the term, and the reference number of the specialist contributing the definition. Under the names of breeds are given details of their derivation, production type (e.g. milk, beef, wool) and, in some cases, colour and measurements. The species covered include all those, including fish, referred to in Animal Breeding Abstracts. The scope of the work is very wide, and the definitions are less rigorous than in more specialised dictionariesdictionariesSubject Category: Publications

(e.g. the definitions or genetic concepts in Rieger and Michaelis's Genetisches und Cytogenetisches Worterbuch) - but perhaps easier to understand. The text is pleasantly set out, and the arrangement of terms is easy to use. Alison Berrill<new para>ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:<new para>Apart from its immense value in German-speaking countries, this dictionary is also of major importance to those engaged in translating items of veterinary literature from German, since it provides definitions of terms, some of which (like "Priemen" and "Metaphylaxe") cannot be found in any other dictionary or textbook. It is a vast improvement on "Veterinarmedizinische Terminologie" by G. Kruger (2nd edition, 1961) and is much more helpful for the veterinarian than contemporary German medical dictionaries. It does not, of course, provide English equivalents of the terms, so there is still a lack of a German-English veterinary dictionary.
