    were found, although this character was absent from the parents. Test crosses indicated that Kinel' 30 carries genes for black awns. A study of the 24 varieties in the pedigree of Kinel' 30 showed that only Prelude had black awns, which it probably inherited from Hard Red Calcutta. Another possible source of black awns in Kinel' 30 was Krymka [wheat from the Crimea]. The survival of the genes for black awns, despite the lack of selection for the trait, suggests that such genes may be linked to genes for a useful trait which was selected for, possibly heat resistance or high technological quality, and could therefore be used as genetic markers.
