see more details/recreation and some agriculture. Part of the coast is being eroded at 3 to 15 metres a year. Discussion focuses around whether this coastal erosion be prevented and if so, which sections merit priority, and what type of action should be taken. The erosion of sand dunes involves ecological and environmental concerns, and the technical solutions need engineering and related inputs. As dunes and beaches bring tourism, the economics of tourism were also involved. Options required a threatened camp site to be relocated, and/or for tourist pressures on the beaches to be reduced by the possible counter-attraction of forests and nature reserves: both of which would impact on agricultural land and that part of the economy. The island's supply of drinking water was also involved. A multi-disciplinary project under the auspices of the Cooperating Institutes for Policy Analyses is described including outline of procedures, techniques and results. The overall success of the project, including its links into decision making, is shown by the speed at which some recommendations were acted on by government.
