Abstract : The Eastern European air transport sector will be one of the first economic sectors to benefit from the lowering of political and economic barriers between East and West, and is expected to experience an increase not only in business travel but in foreign tourism. Despite enormous potential in the latter, however, the sector has been underexploited in Eastern Europe for many years. Successful entry into a competitive, market-driven, international environment will require considerable expertise and emphasis on service improvement, especially on major international routes. The choice of new aircraft and methods of finance will play a major role in this and have a major impact on the fortunes of Eastern European airlines.
