In connection with the planned elimination of loose floating on rivers in the USSR during the next few years, an analysis is made of the scope for rafting as an alternative form of timber transport in the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberia. The analysis covers the lengths of rivers involved, the amounts of wood, duration of period when rafting is possible, raft dimensions, rafting capacity, etc. The study indicates that the logging enterprises adjacent to the rivers Biryusa and Taseeva could raft about 500 000 m3 of roundwood, and as logging operations move northward in the Krasnoyarsk region, rafting can also be organized on other rivers (Bolshoi Pit, Dubches, and Podkamennaya Tunguska).
