This book contains detailed descriptions of viruses isolated from plants growing in the

see more details, and of recognized virus groups. It is intended as an aid to identification of novel viruses. The book is a product of the international VIDE (Virus Identification Data Exchange) project. This project uses the DELTA (DEscription Language for TAxonomy) database system to collect diagnostic information on all

see more details. Information on over 500 characters has been sought for each virus and stored in the VIDE database. Over two-thirds of these characters record the susceptibility, or otherwise, of a range of commonly used test plant species; the remainder represent the great range of other characters used for virus identification. Information on the known host range of each virus is also presented. Following a list of contributors, there is an introductory chapter in which the VIDE database is described and the layout and use of the book and plant virus systematics are outlined. In section 2 known natural hosts of plant viruses in tropical plants are tabulated, firstly as an alphabetical listing of infected plant species and secondly as an alphabetical listing by families. In section 3, the main body of the book, the virus descriptions are presented. Section 4 comprises the virus group descriptions and a table for virus group identification. In the appendix the virus questionnaire used to compile the database and a list of sources of commercially available diagnostic aids are provided.
