  • Effect of storage medium on viability of seed in some fuelwood species.

    Abstract : Seeds of 15 fuelwood species (Cassia siamea, C. fistula, Albizia lebbeck, Acacia nilotica var. cupressiformis, Peltophorum pterocarpum, Parkinsonia aculeata, Acacia auriculiformis, Acacia holosericea, Acacia ampliceps, Acacia mangium, Azadirachta indica, Eucalyptus tereticornis, Casuarina equisetifolia, Prosopis juliflora and Gliricidia sepium) were stored in various media, viz. ash, dry dung manure, dry soil and boric acid powder. The control seeds were stored without any medium. Seed viability was tested annually by using 0.1% triphenyl tetrazolium chloride with the exception of A. indica where it was tested monthly. Viability decreased with an increase in the storage period. Acacia nilotica var. cupressiformis and C. fistula showed 100% viability up to two years of storage. At the end of 4th year, only C. fistula showed 100% viability in all storage media. Seed viability in Azadirachta indica was limited to three months with decreasing percentage. However, storage in soil and dung manure kept the percentage at higher level. In general, the use of storage media help increase the percentage of seed viability.
