    . The germination percentage in the oil polluted soil at 4.5% was 40-50% when sown 30 days after contamination (T30), while it was only 20-25% when sown at the time of contamination (T0). Seedling shoot lengths were severely affected by oil contamination greater than 3%. Plants exposed to 4.5% oil contaminated soil grew to only 17±0.4 cm tall and 26.5±0.6 cm for maize and 6.5±0.3 and 10±0.4 for wheat at T0 and T30, respectively. The concentration of Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn was 3-3.5 times more than that of control.
