    . β-Sitosterol (100, 150 and 200 mg/kg) exerted statistically significant and dose dependent antiinflammatory activity in carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema, which was similar to that of indomethacin (10 mg/kg). At 150 mg/kg, β-sitosterol inhibited the arachidonic acid - elicited rat paw oedema 1 h after arachidonic acid challenge. Topical application of β-sitosterol significantly inhibited ear inflammation induced by multiple applications of tetradecanoyl-phorbol 13- acetate.     and number of neutrophil migration into the rat pleural cavity. Administration of β-sitosterol at 150 mg/kg significantly inhibited the adjuvant-induced rat paw oedema. These results suggest that β-sitosterol exerts antiinflammatory activity, at least in part through inhibition of cyclooxygenase and 5-lipoxygenase pathways.
