About CAB Direct

CAB Direct is an independent science and evidence publication covering agriculture, plants, animals, health, nutrition, the environment and research. Its editorial pages are designed to explain what evidence shows, how certain a conclusion is and where the limits of that evidence remain.

The site also preserves an archive layer for historical links that previously pointed to the CAB Direct database. Editorial articles and archive records are kept distinct so readers can tell current explanatory content from historical database material.

What CAB Direct publishes

Editorial content includes explainers and research digests. Claims that depend on a number, date or research result are expected to be traceable to a source. Health and nutrition content has additional review requirements because errors in those subjects can have direct consequences for readers.

How articles are checked

  • Every article carries a named author with a stated role.
  • Numbers, dates and claims about research findings are checked against traceable sources.
  • Health and nutrition articles are reviewed by a qualified medical reviewer before publication.
  • Health and nutrition articles include an evidence level and explain why that rating applies.
  • Corrections are dated and remain visible when a substantive change is made.

Authors and contributors

Author records identify the contributor’s role, subject area and listed qualifications. See /authors/ for the contributor index and the standards applied to author profiles.

The former CAB Direct database

CABI records its launch of CAB Direct as its own platform for CAB Abstracts in 2003. CABI later moved its database content to CABI Digital Library; its 2023 annual review states that the migration of more than 15 million records from CAB Direct was completed that year.
